Gazelec suffered their eighth consecutive defeat last weekend when they lost 2-1 at Nantes on Saturday afternoon. If they end up relegated – which looks increasingly likely – then it won’t be defeats against promotion chasers like Nantes that will have cost them, but points dropped against rivals battling for Ligue 2 survival.

That’s why this rearranged clash against Chateauroux – to be played on neutral territory in Creteil, south of Paris – is absolutely vital. It may be overstating things to call this game Gazelec’s last chance but when you’re on such an awful run of results, have slipped to the bottom of the table and lie 10pts from safety with only 10 games to go, time is clearly not on your side.

And yet for all their troubles in recent weeks I would give Gazelec a chance. Visitors Chateauroux have yet to win away from home this season. They have picked up just 6pts from 14 away games. At home they are formidable opponents but that’s because the players know exactly what to
